Letter of the week: O is for Olivia the Piglet

We have done O a number of times, but it is such an easy letter to work with, so we're doing it again.  This time, O is for Olivia the Pig.

I cut out all the pieces for this Olivia, and my daughter glued them on the "O".  We also added the red ribbon to the ears because now Olivia is dressed for the Oscars this evening.  Adding the red ribbon is great though because it helps children with their hand/eye coordination.  My daughter did put the ribbons through the holes and I tied them.

My daughter is really on an Olivia kick, and not so much the Nick Jr. show (even though she has watched it), but we have borrowed so many Olivia books from the Library, and my daughter loves to read them over and over again.

I like Olivia the Piglet.  I certainly don't love her, but I do like that she has big dreams and an even bigger imagination.  And it may just be my daughter's 3.5ness (well, she's almost 3.5), but her imagination is in full bloom right now.  So as much as I think Olivia the Piglet is a little bit sassy and a little bit self-centered and sometimes even not so nice, she does have some positive aspects (not to mention, she is just adorable).

Letter of the week: O is for Ornament

I know we just did O a short time ago, but as soon as I saw these:

 
I knew we had to do O again.  It's really exciting to me to see something, and immediately say "Let's turn this into ... ".  When I saw these empty ribbon rolls, I immediately thought O is for Ornaments. 

- We painted these ribbon rolls quite a few times.
- Let them dry.
- We put them in a paper plate, put glue on them and shook glitter all over them.
- Then we shook off the excess glue on the paper plate.
- We attached a ribbon, and now they are hanging on the tree.

O is for Opposites

When thinking about activities for the Letter O, I thought about all the usual ones:  Octopus, Owl, and Otter.  I just couldn't make a decision, but we really wanted to do the letter O because my daughter said "Let's do O next".  And I really wanted to do something that went with the Fall Theme.

We were discussing it for days while playing a match game that involved opposites.  My daughter wanted to play this match game over and over again.  And suddenly it dawned on me, "Of course, O is for Opposites.  Why not O is for Opposites".  It doesn't really go with the Fall Theme, but Pumpkins are involved, so it works!

I used a long piece of cardboard and drew the large letter O and the small letter O.

I used pictures from the Mailboxes "Big Book Of Patterns".  I glued one picture of each to the cardboard.  My daughter and I discussed what the picture was, and I asked her to find the opposite.  Once she found it, she glued the opposite next to each picture.

You could also glue only one picture and use velcro pieces for the other.  That way the "O is for Opposites" game can be played over and over again.

 

I like the idea of cardboard because not only are you reusing something that may go to waste, but there was plenty of room on the cardboard after we were done for my daughter to trace the O, as well as, color and draw whatever she liked.  She ended up drawing O's all over the cardboard.
